CASE STUDY 06 • SECURE WEB ENGINEERING

Building a Security-Conscious Technical Portfolio

The live portfolio itself is treated as engineering evidence: a Next.js application with deliberate security headers, constrained browser capabilities, privacy-conscious design and a deployment history that can be reviewed alongside the security case studies it presents.

PROBLEM

A security portfolio should not ignore the security of the portfolio itself.

The site is both a public professional surface and a technical artefact. That makes deployment configuration, browser security policy, exposed information and change history part of the engineering story rather than background implementation detail.

WEB SECURITY CONTROLS

Reduce unnecessary browser capability and common web attack paths.

  • Content Security Policy: constrains scripts, images, styles, connections, framing, base URIs and form destinations.
  • HSTS: instructs supported browsers to prefer HTTPS for the domain and subdomains.
  • Frame protection: `X-Frame-Options: DENY` and CSP `frame-ancestors 'none'` reduce clickjacking exposure.
  • MIME protection: `X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff` reduces content-type confusion.
  • Permissions Policy: disables browser capabilities such as camera, microphone and geolocation that the portfolio does not need.
  • Referrer Policy: limits unnecessary referrer disclosure across origins.
  • Framework disclosure: the default powered-by header is disabled.

PRIVACY-CONSCIOUS DESIGN

Publish enough evidence to be useful without exposing unnecessary personal or operational detail.

The portfolio favours controlled public evidence: technical summaries, sanitised architecture, public GitHub repositories and explicit project classifications. Fictional work is labelled fictional, proprietary Cloud Forge implementation remains private and sensitive evidence is not treated as portfolio decoration.

DELIVERY

Use source control and automated deployment as part of the evidence chain.

The application is maintained in GitHub and deployed through Vercel. Changes to case studies, security configuration and public evidence therefore produce a visible engineering history and a repeatable production deployment rather than a manually edited static profile.

EVIDENCE

The site connects technical claims to public artefacts.

The live portfolio now links the Sentinel SOC lab, Azure IAM governance lab, AWS Terraform security environment, multi-cloud Detection as Code project, Cloud Forge security architecture and the portfolio source itself. Each case study distinguishes architecture or implemented code from validation still in progress.

This case study documents the controls visible in the public source and deployment architecture. It does not claim that a public portfolio site is equivalent to a full production application security programme.

LESSONS

Professional credibility improves when the presentation layer follows the same evidence discipline as the projects.

A portfolio becomes stronger when a reviewer can move from a summary claim to the corresponding repository, inspect the implementation, see what has actually been validated and understand the limits of the evidence.
